Mountain Expansion

An Important Investment for the Future of Skiing & Snowboarding in Utah

Mountain Expansion – an athlete-focused project – will provide enhanced opportunities for Utah’s ski and snowboard teams, expanding their seasons locally and increasing the quantity and quality of training options.

Mountain Expansion is a collaboration between regional teams and winter sport organizations in planning, fundraising, and execution. Only with support from the entire ski and snowboard community, as well as winter sport enthusiasts, will this exciting and impactful project come to life.

An Incredible Gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation

In an extraordinary gesture of support for Utah’s legacy and future as a world-class winter sport destination, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation has awarded $5 million to complete the second phase of Utah Olympic Park’s mountain expansion, cementing the state’s status as an elite center of winter sport training and competition for generations to come.

Foundation Chairman & CEO Spencer F. Eccles – a statewide leader in business, education, philanthropy, and sports who was an All-American ski racer for the University of Utah – highlighted the project’s lasting potential to foster growth and inclusiveness in winter sports, especially for youth participants.

“Our investment in this project is aimed at expanding opportunities for Utah’s youth to pursue interests in winter sports,” said Spence Eccles, “and to build a strong future for winter sport training in our state as we prepare to host another Olympic Winter Games. Whether kids develop a love for skiing, snowboarding, or winter sports they’ll enjoy for a lifetime, or have the talent and determination to become future Olympians, our grant is an investment in Utah’s future.”

“Our Foundation is thrilled to be able to cap off the funding for this project,” added Foundation President & COO Lisa Eccles, “knowing it will build on Utah’s exceptional ability – and worldwide reputation – for offering training opportunities for entry level ski racers and world-class winter sport athletes alike.”

Said Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation (UOLF) CEO Colin Hilton: “We are incredibly grateful to have the steadfast support of the Eccles Foundation in creating a mountain sports center that’s world-class in every way. Spence Eccles has inspired me for more than 20 years through his vision and passion to make Olympic Winter Sport accessible and open to all ages and ability levels, especially to Utah’s youth.”

The grant was announced Thursday August 18, 2022 at UOLF’s annual Anti-Gala fundraiser at Utah Olympic Park.
